So, if you as a boss are willing to take the time to regularly listen to your employees, you’ll not only make their day but you’ll begin to attract people toward you like a magnet. As the French writer, Jules de Goncourt put it, “Never speak of yourself to others; make them talk about themselves instead; therein lies the whole art of pleasing. Everybody knows it, and everyone forgets it.” So make it a point to be a caring listener and watch your popularity and effectiveness as a boss start to soar. “I say, ‘Kill ‘em with kindness’ and treat them like you’d like to be treated.  MAKE UP praise if you have to.  Negative people are not used to that vibration and will sometimes just stop in their tracks when you flood them with positive praise.  Try to step back and see the bigger picture of their lives, why their egos are inflated, sometimes to cover up deep insecurities. Understand that they might be getting pressure from THEIR Bosses that stresses them out and makes them take it out on you.  I’ve asked grumpy bosses, “It seems like you’re a little down today. Is there something I can do to help?”  If the boss won’t give you praise, start your OWN forum where co-workers can create the positive reinforcement web among themselves.  If the boss sees happy and positive workers, he or she may get caught up in the good vibes and think twice before coming out and blasting negativity at everyone.  I love the following quote from Goethe regarding this subject: “If I accept you as you are, I will make you worse. “I have been reading the manuscript of your new book Instant Turnaround! The concept is so simple, yet it’s amazing how most people do not understand it or have time for it—not even in their own families! It reminds me of a super effective boss I once had. Daily he would visit as many people in our department as he could with a never empty cup of coffee. He would sit with the person he was visiting for up to 15 or 20 minutes exchanging information about himself and listening to obtain information from the worker. This created a very happy workforce and everyone went more than the extra mile necessary to accomplish their work. And, the more people you’re nice to, the more people you have out there who are looking for an opportunity to be nice to you. For example, how many times have you heard someone say something like: “I really didn’t want to take the time to help that person, but since he or she is so nice, I couldn’t tell them no.” This makes being nice a very selfish act because the more you give of yourself, the more you can expect to receive. As Linda Kaplan Thaler and Robin Koval say in their excellent book, The Power of Nice, “The power of nice will help you open doors, improve your relationships at work and at home, and let you sleep a whole lot better. Nice not only finishes first; those who use its nurturing power wind up happier, to boot!” Yes, being nice is selfish…in a very good way. One of the questions she always asks is: “What kind of supervisor do you prefer?” Never once has anyone said, “I’d love to be micromanaged.” Or, “I love it when my boss points out my mistakes and ignores what I do well.” Or, ”I absolutely love to be berated in front of others.” As Harry Paul and I point out in our new book, Instant Turnaround!, these are the kinds of managerial behaviors that create unhappy and unproductive employees which makes you as a team leader, supervisor or manager look incompetent. On the other hand, if you want to succeed as a manager, why not give your employees what the truly want. They found that the simple act of paying positive attention to employees had the dominant impact. Today, nearly a century later, we’re still finding that the vast majority of employees are unhappy in their jobs because their management doesn’t care about them or notice what they do. This leads to low productivity and high turnover. Their sentiment goes something like this: ”Why work hard or stick around if nobody cares?” At the same time, executives and managers, almost across the board, are saying that low productivity and high turnover are their biggest problems. Hello! What’s there not to get? If executives and managers would start caring about their employees instead of trying to exploit them, these problems will turn around immediately!
