<p>A number of Bad Bosses have already been Tagged.  One Bad Boss who was Tagged has already stepped down from his managerial position and has accepted a non-supervisory position where he is much happier.  In his old department everyone is relieved and extremely happy.  One of the Bad Boss&#8217;s former employees remarked on the day after the Bad Boss stepped down, &#8221;I can&#8217;t believe it !?!  Things  already are different-I&#8217;ve actually heard laughter around the department for the first time in ages.&#8221;  Another employee remarked, &#8220;I am so-o-o-o-o happy!&#8221;</p>

<p>It has been estimated that the cost of employee turnover in America is 1.7 trillion dollars annually.  That&#8217;s a huge drain on American businesses.  Studies have also shown that the biggest single reason people quit their jobs is the behavior of their immediate boss&#8211;they were either abusive, didn&#8217;t care about them, didn&#8217;t listen, didn&#8217;t notice or appreciate what they did or were only out for themselves.  Believe it or not, there&#8217;s good news in all of this.  If American businesses would simply teach their bosses how to interact more effectively with their employees, they could reclaim the lion&#8217;s share of that 1.7 trillion dollars.   We&#8217;re not talking about rocket science here, we&#8217;retalking about basic behaviors like being nice instead of nasty or indifferent, noticing the things employees do and saying thank you.  These behaviors may not sound all that profound, but if the majority of bosses in America would take the time to effectively execute these behaviors, it would fatten the bottom lines of American businesses by more than a trillion dollars&#8211; that <em>is</em> profound!</p>

<p>The biggest problem we face in the War on Bad Bosses is that most Bad Bosses think they&#8217;re doing  a pretty good job.  I asked one person, who I knew was a pretty Bad Boss&#8211;he was very prone to yelling at his employees&#8211;to read a copy of <em>Instant Turnaround! </em>This book will show any Bad Boss what they need to do to become a Great Boss.  When he finished reading it, he called me and said he thoroughly enjoyed it and found it &#8220;very reaffirming.&#8221;   This person had no clue that his employees absolutely despised him and were very unproductive as a result.  This is why Bad Bosses normally need a painful jolt of reality before the will even consider making the changes necessary to become a Great Boss.  This is why we instituted the Bad Boss Tagging program.  It provides that necessary but painful jolt of reality.  For more information about the program, go to <a href="http://www.bosstrenz.com">www.bosstrenz.com</a>.</p>

Taking a personal interest like this communicates the deepest form of caring.  Even if the employee doesn&#8217;t want to talk about why they&#8217;re down, they will always remember that their boss cared enough to ask.  This not only energizes the employee who down; it also gives them every incentive to go the extra mile for their boss. <p>&#8220;I say, &#8216;Kill ‘em with kindness&#8217; and treat them like you’d like to be treated.  MAKE UP praise if you have to.  Negative people are not used to that vibration and will sometimes just stop in their tracks when you flood them with positive praise.  Try to step back and see the bigger picture of their lives, why their egos are inflated, sometimes to cover up deep insecurities. Understand that they might be getting pressure from THEIR Bosses that stresses them out and makes them take it out on you.  I’ve asked grumpy bosses, “It seems like you’re a little down today. Is there something I can do to help?”  If the boss won’t give you praise, start your OWN forum where co-workers can create the positive reinforcement web among themselves.  If the boss sees happy and positive workers, he or she may get caught up in the good vibes and think twice before coming out and blasting negativity at everyone.  I love the following quote from Goethe regarding this subject: “If I accept you as you are, I will make you worse. 			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Having fun at work suffers from an image problem; hence it gets no respect.  It has come to imply that you’re goofing off or messing around instead of attending to the business at hand.  Well, that’s simply not true.  Fun acts as a turbocharger in that it releases energy in people that they didn’t even know they had.  As a result, they’re able to work much harder than they normally would.  In addition, when work becomes a source of enjoyment or pleasure, whatever you’re doing never gets old or boring which means people look forward to coming to work every day—even on Monday.  On the other hand, when fun is restricted or prohibited at work, unhealthy and costly symptoms quickly appear—boredom and negativity set in, people become irritable and crabby and their energy level goes down.  As a result, people apply far less effort toward performing their jobs and productivity takes a big hit.  The lesson here is that if there’s no fun, there can be no highly productive workplace. They found that the simple act of paying positive attention to employees had the <strong>dominant</strong> impact.  Today, nearly a century later, we’re still finding that the vast majority of employees are unhappy in their jobs because their management doesn’t care about them or notice what they do.  This leads to low productivity and high turnover.  Their sentiment goes something like this: ”Why work hard or stick around if nobody cares?”  At the same time, executives and managers, almost across the board, are saying that low productivity and high turnover are their biggest problems.  Hello!  What’s there not to get?
