It has been estimated that the cost of employee turnover in America is 1.7 trillion dollars annually.  That’s a huge drain on American businesses.  Studies have also shown that the biggest single reason people quit their jobs is the behavior of their immediate boss–they were either abusive, didn’t care about them, didn’t listen, didn’t notice or appreciate what they did or were only out for themselves.  Believe it or not, there’s good news in all of this.  If American businesses would simply teach their bosses how to interact more effectively with their employees, they could reclaim the lion’s share of that 1.7 trillion dollars.   We’re not talking about rocket science here, we’retalking about basic behaviors like being nice instead of nasty or indifferent, noticing the things employees do and saying thank you.  These behaviors may not sound all that profound, but if the majority of bosses in America would take the time to effectively execute these behaviors, it would fatten the bottom lines of American businesses by more than a trillion dollars– that is profound!

This begs the question: what’s the best way to recognize someone for a job well done? A survey recently published in USA Today found that the most preferred way people want to be recognized is verbal recognition. Verbal recognition was preferred more than twice as much as cash bonuses, nearly five times as much as additional time off and seven times as much as thank you cards or notes. So, the next time someone goes the extra mile for you and you want them to do it again in the future, reach out and shake their hand, look them in the eye and say “thank you.” This is how Great Bosses get that way.

Even if the employee doesn’t want to talk about why they’re down, they will always remember that their boss cared enough to ask. This not only energizes the employee who down; it also gives them every incentive to go the extra mile for their boss. “I have been reading the manuscript of your new book Instant Turnaround! The concept is so simple, yet it’s amazing how most people do not understand it or have time for it—not even in their own families! It reminds me of a super effective boss I once had. Daily he would visit as many people in our department as he could with a never empty cup of coffee. He would sit with the person he was visiting for up to 15 or 20 minutes exchanging information about himself and listening to obtain information from the worker. This created a very happy workforce and everyone went more than the extra mile necessary to accomplish their work. Needless to say, this manager was sorely missed when he was promoted.” This manager showed a genuine interest in the people who worked for him and they went out of their way to make him successful–it doesn’t get any simpler than that.
