Good Bosses Take the Time to Brighten People’s Days

When an employee apears to be down, good bosses notice and take the time to build them back up. They go to them and say something like, “You seem kind of down today, is everything all right?” Then they make sure they listen to what that person has to say and then look for ways to lighten their load. Taking a personal interest like this communicates the deepest form of caring. Even if the employee doesn’t want to talk about why they’re down, they will always remember that their boss cared enough to ask. This not only energizes the employee who down; it also gives them every incentive to go the extra mile for their boss. Why Are Bosses Who Listen So Popular?

Bosses who listen communicate clearly that they care about their employees. They understand that employees don’t want to listen to a boss tell his or her story, but those same employees are dying to tell their story to a boss who cares. So, if you as a boss are willing to take the time to regularly listen to your employees, you’ll not only make their day but you’ll begin to attract people toward you like a magnet. As the French writer, Jules de Goncourt put it, “Never speak of yourself to others; make them talk about themselves instead; therein lies the whole art of pleasing. Everybody knows it, and everyone forgets it.” So make it a point to be a caring listener and watch your popularity and effectiveness as a boss start to soar. Being Nice is a Key to Everyone’s Success!

When you’re nice to people, they’re nice back–it’s called The Law of Reciprocity. And, the more people you’re nice to, the more people you have out there who are looking for an opportunity to be nice to you. For example, how many times have you heard someone say something like: “I really didn’t want to take the time to help that person, but since he or she is so nice, I couldn’t tell them no.” This makes being nice a very selfish act because the more you give of yourself, the more you can expect to receive. As Linda Kaplan Thaler and Robin Koval say in their excellent book, The Power of Nice, “The power of nice will help you open doors, improve your relationships at work and at home, and let you sleep a whole lot better. Nice not only finishes first; those who use its nurturing power wind up happier, to boot!” Yes, being nice is selfish…in a very good way.
