Putting Down an Employee’s Idea Will Cost You
When an employee puts forth an idea, his or her ego is connected to it. Consequently, if you their boss, put down or attack their idea, you bruise their ego and they become defensive and unproductive. Now that employee is working against you instead of with you. So, the next time someone presents an idea to you–even if you don’t agree with it–hear them out. Ask a few questions about it to make sure you fully understand where that person is coming from. Then, make some positive suggestions on how that person can improve their “already excellent” idea. Your employees will respect you for doing this and will be far more receptive the next time you present an idea.
If you have a boss who doesn’t seem to understand this concept, have him or her tagged as a Bad Boss using our Bad Boss Tagging Program. Go to www.bosstrenz.com.
