Negative Bosses Cannot be Ignored
Negative bosses who make nasty comments to belittle or suppress those who work for them are a tremendous drain on the productivity of a business. The problem is that negative comments are hurtful and almost always ruin people’s days. When this occurs, it immediately sucks away people’s energy and now they are no longer able to apply their best effort toward doing their job. A friend of ours recently told us that he receives at least one degrading email a month from one of his superiors. “When this happens,” he said, “I completely shut down for the rest of the day.” Let’s assume that 29 other employees received similar emails from that same person. If each of them responded by shutting down for a half-day, that’s 15 days of lost productivity each month all because of one thoughtless email! The message here is: If you have a negative boss working at your company don’t ignore them because they’re making you miserable and your company less competitive. When I worked in the corporate world, my last area of work had a boss that was in his early 50’s and the department had 12 people in it. Half of the employees were under 40 and the other half were 41 to 59.
We were in a staff meeting one day called by the boss to discuss two open positions and the status of the applicants. It was necessary for him to share this info because the rest of the staff were getting tired of filling in for the two jobs.
In the middle of the meeting, the boss stood up and loudly declared “From now on, I’m only hiring MBA’s and they will be less than 30 years old.”
The older half of the group gasped and one lady in her late 40’s even started to shake. The younger crowd just averted their eyes from the boss and from the older group.
We don’t know why he said what he said but what came across to us was that the older group’s jobs were in danger.
I was the 59 year old and a few months later, when it came time to discuss my retirement plans, I immediately told the boss that I was retiring as soon as I reached 60. I also told him that, because of his remark that day, I no longer trusted his judgement.
In the 4 years since, I started my own company and just love my boss.
