When employees feel abused, mistreated or unappreciated by their boss, they either look for a job somewhere else or they retaliate by cutting back on their productivity. Researchers have estimated that the cost of employee turnover alone in America to be $1.7 trillion annually. Bad bosses are those who treat their employees in ways that do not bring out their best efforts. Not bringing out the best efforts of your employees is like leaving money lay on the table at the end of the day. This is bad for America in that it makes our entire economy less productive than it could be. American businesses should produce the best automobiles in the world, but they don’t. Why not? Too many Bad Bosses who don’t care about their employees much less value their input and contributions. This is sad because the individual employee has always been the primary source of productivity increases, product improvement and innovation. Yet, the many Bad Bosses in American businesses treat them like they’re not capable of thinking at all. Last week, Harry Paul and I attended the Arizona State Conference for the Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM). A number of Bad Bosses have already been Tagged. One Bad Boss who was Tagged has already stepped down from his managerial position and has accepted a non-supervisory position where he is much happier. In his old department everyone is relieved and extremely happy. One of the Bad Boss’s former employees remarked on the day after the Bad Boss stepped down, ”I can’t believe it !?! Things already are different-I’ve actually heard laughter around the department for the first time in ages.” Another employee remarked, “I am so-o-o-o-o happy!”

- Zero tolerance for bad bosses who make the lives of the people who work for them miserable.
- Zero tolerance for incompetent managers who don’t care about their employees.
- Zero tolerance for out of touch senior executives (including the CEO) who fail to recognize that their employees are their most important resource.

It has been estimated that the cost of employee turnover in America is 1.7 trillion dollars annually. That’s a huge drain on American businesses. Studies have also shown that the biggest single reason people quit their jobs is the behavior of their immediate boss–they were either abusive, didn’t care about them, didn’t listen, didn’t notice or appreciate what they did or were only out for themselves. Believe it or not, there’s good news in all of this. If American businesses would simply teach their bosses how to interact more effectively with their employees, they could reclaim the lion’s share of that 1.7 trillion dollars. We’re not talking about rocket science here, we’retalking about basic behaviors like being nice instead of nasty or indifferent, noticing the things employees do and saying thank you. These behaviors may not sound all that profound, but if the majority of bosses in America would take the time to effectively execute these behaviors, it would fatten the bottom lines of American businesses by more than a trillion dollars– that is profound!
